Mechanisms
- Bestowal — Someone with authority assigns the string — parents, elders, a ritual specialist.
- Frequency dependence — Rarity and popularity are moving targets; parents react to last year’s chart.
- Signal reading — Strangers infer group membership from a forename under time pressure.
- Order rules — Whether the given name is written first is a cultural setting, not a universal.
Debates
- How many given names are enough? — Iberian and Hispanic traditions often expect several; English forms may truncate them.
- Should statistics offices publish ranks? — They aid research and also feed rank worship. Methodology notes matter.
- Is a “unique” given name unfair to the child? — A values clash: distinctiveness versus correction labour. Not a scientific verdict.
Given-name science is about frequencies and hearers. Leave trait forecasts to fiction.
