A battle record

Republic of Korea Armed Forces (1948): ROK armed forces with the state

[58] [rok-military-1-58] Republic of Korea Armed Forces is the record of 1948 under “ROK armed forces with the state.” The figure to read with it is 1950. Do not arrange states in a league. Fix who moved what, and where, to that year. Do not add a later war into the same total. Yulgok, in the Park Chung-hee decades, is the second hinge: a state-led attempt to move from grant aid and second-hand US

A defining social fact of the ROK state 1979 military politics -- see korea-1979; not a method The Republic of Korea Armed Forces were organised with the 1948 state, out of a constabulary and a politics of occupation, and were nearly destroyed in the first weeks after 25 June 1950. Paik Sun-yup, Chung Il-kwon, and a thin officer corps fought a retreat to the Pusan (Busan) Perimeter, then a UN war that included Inchon (15 September 1950) as a US-led amphibious hinge. The 27 July 1953 armistice and the 1 October 1953 Mutual Defense Treaty (into force 1954) made a defensive frontier army under a US alliance -- the institutional fact this page exists to explain. It is not a live order of battle, not a combined-forces directory, and not a how-to for any arm.

English-language memory under-teaches the ROK as an institution and over-teaches it as a US appendix. Korean civic memory is the opposite risk: parade modernity that skips 12.12 (12 December 1979) and the army's political interventions. This atlas splits those files: korea-1979 for the coup, this page for defensive force structure, Hanwha for the works. Intensity is mid because 1950-53 was existential; scale is regional. No current ORBAT.

A frontier army that had to be rebuilt twice -- in 1950 and in industry The ROK military is a 1948 institution that survived 1950 by alliance, then spent Yulgok trying not to be only an alliance appendix -- a political history of a defensive force. Constabulary origins, June 1950 collapse, Pusan, Inchon, a Chinese intervention, and an armistice that was not a peace treaty. Paik and Chung are named because the English file still forgets ROK officers beside MacArthur.

Say Republic of Korea Armed Forces with 1948, “ROK armed forces with the state,” and 1950. The figure is not a national score.1948
