Major honours
An original NHL member as the Toronto Arenas in 1917, the club became the Maple Leafs when Conn Smythe bought it in 1927. Smythe built Maple Leaf Gardens in 1931 amid the Great Depression; Saturday-night broadcasts of Hockey Night in Canada from that building became a national weekend ritual. Five titles in the 1940s included the 1942 Final, when Detroit led 3–0 and Toronto won four straight — still the only 3–0 comeback in Stanley Cup Final history. A three-peat from 1962 to 1964 and a last title in 1967 preceded the longest drought in the NHL: 58 seasons without a championship through 2024–25. Darryl Sittler's ten-point game (six goals, four assists) against Boston on 7 February 1976 still stands, and Auston Matthews scored 69 goals in 2023–24 — the most in a season since 1992–93.

The Montreal Canadiens rivalry was the axis of the Original Six era and Canada's linguistic divide. Recently, repeated playoff meetings with the Boston Bruins have been the more painful name for Toronto fans.
