Founded as the Detroit Cougars in 1926 and renamed in 1932, the club embraced Motor City identity with the nickname Hockeytown. Gordie Howe, Ted Lindsay, and Sid Abel's Production Line powered four titles in 1950, 1952, 1954, and 1955. A 42-year gap ended in 1997 behind the Russian Five, including Slava Fetisov and Sergei Fedorov. The 62-win 1995–96 season stood as the NHL single-season record until Tampa Bay tied it in 2018–19. Steve Yzerman captained titles in 1997, 1998, and 2002; Nicklas Lidstrom became the first European-trained captain to hoist the Cup in 2008.
