How it unfolded
Lino Cervar's Croatia carried the momentum from winning the 2003 home world championship in Zagreb all the way to Athens. Its opponent in the August 29 final at the Helliniko Indoor Arena was Germany, and Croatia won 26-24 for its second Olympic gold, following 1996 Atlanta. The tournament's MVP was Croatian center back Ivano Balic, a player who built his game on deception rather than power. His signature weapons were a step-back fake that froze an entire defensive line and a no-look pass to a pivot who had vanished from view, and he was named IHF Player of the Year twice, in 2003 and 2006, and was voted the greatest handball player of all time in a 2010 IHF online poll. Croatia finished runner-up at the world championship in both 2005 and 2009 and at the European championship in both 2008 and 2010, and without the Athens gold, that generation would be remembered only for a string of near-misses.
Why it still matters
The mere existence of a player like Balic changed how this sport talks about tactics. Before him, a center back's value was calculated on size and shot power; after him, coaches began teaching pausing and gaze deception as distinct, teachable skills. Even today, youth coaches explaining the principles of a feint reach first for footage of Balic from 2003 to 2006.
