T1 finished its LCK regular season in fourth place that year and only reached the World Championship through the regional qualifier. Its opponent, Bilibili Gaming, was the LPL champion and had looked the most consistent team throughout the tournament. Built around Doran, Oner, Faker, Gumayusi and Keria, T1 grew stronger the further the bracket went, and the two teams played all five games of the final. Faker decided it. Nearing thirty years old, he kept shutting down the opponent's engage angles from mid lane, and his positioning protected his own back line in every decisive teamfight. T1 won 3-2 to complete the organization's fifth World Championship title, and Faker was named finals MVP, eleven years after the same player won the same award on the same stage for the first time.
Why it still matters
No player anywhere in esports has reached the world summit of the same game five times across an eleven-year span. It broke, at once, the assumption that reflexes peak in the early twenties and the assumption that a fourth-place regional team cannot go far at Worlds.
