How it unfolded
A year earlier, Luke Littler had entered this tournament as a qualifier ranked outside the top 150 and reached the final at 16, losing 7-4 to Luke Humphries. In between, he won the 2024 Premier League on his debut, beating final opponent Humphries, and also took the World Darts Grand Slam. His opponent in the final on 3 January 2025 was three-time world champion Michael van Gerwen, chasing a fourth title and trying to reverse a drought stretching back to 2019. The match tilted Littler's way. He matched van Gerwen's scoring pace, edged ahead on the finishes, and won 7-3. He was 17 years and 347 days old at the time, well ahead of the previous youngest PDC champion, van Gerwen himself, who had been 24. On the podium, he was barely two years out of school.
Why it still matters
This is the event that shifted the sport's demographics overnight. Littler's run through 2024 and 2025 pulled in the biggest television audiences in darts history, and board sales and youth participation surged in Britain, the Netherlands and Germany. Teenagers flocked into a sport that had, for close to fifty years, been thrown mainly by men in their forties, and for the first time the sport's peak-age curve began to fall.
