How it unfolded
Stage 17 of the 1949 Giro covered 254 km from Cuneo to Pinerolo over five climbs, the Colle della Maddalena, Vars, Izoard, Montgenevre and Sestriere. Fausto Coppi attacked at the very start of the first climb, the Maddalena, with 192 km still to race, a distance considered reckless even by the standards of the day. Alone over unpaved gravel and mud, his gap only grew. Radio commentator Mario Ferretti's line, opening with "a man alone is in the lead", became one of the most quoted phrases in Italian sports broadcasting. Coppi reached Pinerolo having ridden 192 km solo, with rival Gino Bartali arriving 11 minutes 52 seconds later. This single stage let Coppi reclaim the maglia rosa and go on to win the Giro, and that July he added the Tour de France to complete the first-ever Giro-Tour double. He repeated the feat in 1952.
Why it still matters
This day defined how a solo breakaway becomes cycling mythology. Every long-range attack since has been measured against this stage, and the Coppi-Bartali rivalry is read as a direct mirror of postwar Italy's social divisions. Only seven riders have completed the Giro-Tour double since, and Pogacar repeated it in 2024, 26 years after the last time it was done.
