How it unfolded
The West Indies scored 453 in the first innings behind Garfield Sobers' 132, and Australia replied with 505 built on Norman O'Neill's 181. The West Indies' second innings of 284 left Australia a target of 233. Australia looked to be collapsing at 92 for 6, but Alan Davidson and captain Richie Benaud added 134 together to turn the match around. Davidson became the first player to score a century and take ten wickets in the same Test. With eight balls left, Australia needed six runs with three wickets standing. In Wes Hall's final over, Benaud was caught behind, then Wally Grout was run out attempting a second run off a throw from Conrad Hunte from the boundary. With the scores level, off the final ball, Joe Solomon hit a direct throw from square leg with only one stump visible to run out Ian Meckiff. Both teams finished on 737 — the first tie in Test history. It was also the first series with Frank Worrell installed as full-time captain, and when the series ended, roughly half a million people lined the streets of Melbourne to see the touring team off.
Why it still matters
A match that instantly reversed public fatigue with the slow, low-scoring cricket of the late 1950s. This series proved that attacking cricket could draw crowds, and the rivalry between the two nations was afterward named the Frank Worrell Trophy. It was also the moment that cemented Worrell's standing as the West Indies' first regular Black captain, laying the foundation for two decades of Caribbean dominance that followed.
