Stanley Lieberson’s A Matter of Taste (2000) is the atlas’s house theory: people want distinction inside a style, so they flee last year’s exact peak and copy its neighbours. Official files let you watch the argument as history. They do not tell you which pole is “better,” and they do not license luck talk.

It is more familiar to local mouths and may feel dated in a new cycle. Safety is social, not cosmic. It can increase correction labour and teasing risk. It can also carry heritage or art. That is a values trade, not a verdict. In SSA files Mary led U.S. girls’ counts for much of 1880–1961. That is a historical band, not a law of nature or a live #1.

Because “unique” often means “same new ending as my friends.” Lieberson called this neighbourhood imitation. Unfamiliarity and group stereotypes can both matter. Emily/Lakisha is about racialised classics and distinctives, not a simple unique-penalty law. In some KOSTAT years native Korean given names rose relative to Sino-Korean ones — a dated mix, not a uniqueness contest.
