Place names in : From gazetteer to platform

National names boards (e.g. the U.S. BGN), legislatures, and sometimes UNGEGN coordination — not SSA baby-name staff. Names on the Land (1945, later editions) is a classic narrative of U.S. place-naming — a voice, not a statute. Are commemorative street names a good idea? They are a political choice. They also create the next renaming fight. This atlas describes; it does not score heroes.

Do place names trend like baby names? Much more slowly. A new suburb or a renamed capital is an event, not an annual ONS-style sport. Can a place name become a given name? Yes (Madison, Brooklyn in English-language files — historical transfers). That leak is fashion, dated in SSA/ONS if you cite it.

Is a “pretty meaning” the real etymology? Often not. Folk etymology loves a legend. Prefer a place-name survey. Hunter-gatherer and farming communities named landmarks long before states. States then wanted one official string per point. Colonial offices were the most aggressive renaming machines. Restoration movements are the long aftershock.
