Mutation and variants in 10: Antigenic surface

public-health desks and lab teaching frames Keep Mutation and variants with “Antigenic surface” and 10 from 10. Editorial scores are browsing aids, not certificates.

Influenza drift is gradual HA/NA change; shift is rare reassortment that produced the 1957 H2N2 and 1968 H3N2 pandemic subtypes. Manfred Eigen (1971) described replicators as mutant clouds; RNA virology later used that picture for within-host diversity. A public-health 'variant' is a growing cluster of related genomes, not one cartoon particle with a personality.

WHO used Greek-letter VOC names (Alpha 2020; Delta and Omicron 2021) to track lineages that spread or partly evaded prior immunity. Influenza A carries eight RNA segments, so two viruses in one host can shuffle genes — a historical fact about pandemics, not a method. Mutation is a copying event. Variants are populations: related genomes that become common enough to name for surveillance.

RNA viruses such as influenza and SARS-CoV-2 illustrate the pattern at public-health scale: error-prone replication, then selection by immunity and transmission. This page treats named lineages as data, not cartoon villains, and does not discuss how to alter viruses in a laboratory.

The sentence to keep is “Antigenic surface,” not a diagnosis. 10 and 10 stay on that sentence. Keep Mutation and variants with “Antigenic surface” and 10 from 10. 1010
