Switching in year one

A first-year change of major is a credit problem with a deadline, not a verdict on your character.

Most systems allow a change after evidence, not after a personality quiz. The expensive mistake is waiting until year three to discover that the weekly load and the licence gate were visible in week one.

Credits do not travel inside a university as automatically as marketing implies. A lab sequence, a language year or a studio portfolio may count, partially count, or be discarded. Ask for the written mapping rule.

Deadlines are administrative. Korea’s transfer and major-change windows, US add/drop and internal-transfer dates, and European reorientation semesters are different documents. Learn the date before you fall in love with a new name.

Switching toward a licensed field usually costs more time than switching between two bachelor subjects in the same faculty. Medicine, nursing, teaching and architecture may require a new admissions gate, not only a form.

Talk to students who changed, including one who lost a semester. Their account of which courses actually transferred beats a single success story.

This is not a ranking of which major is wiser. It is a way to keep the first year reversible. Confirm the rule with your faculty office; it changes by cohort.

A reversible first year

1

Find the switch date

Write the last day your faculty accepts a major change for your cohort.

2

Map overlapping courses

List which current credits the destination department has accepted in the last two years.

3

Check a new gate

If the destination is licensed, name the extra exam or hours before you move.

4

Budget one lost term

Assume a short delay is possible and decide whether housing and visas can absorb it.

5

Tell the evidence

Grades, energy and whether you seek the work are the data. A vibe is not a plan.

Myths about changing

Reality check Early evidence is the point of year one. Sunk-cost pride is more expensive.

Common mistake Every credit follows you.

Reality check Departments publish mapping rules. Hope is not a transcript.

Common mistake The best major is the one that is hardest to leave.

Reality check Difficulty is not destiny. Fit is load, method and the gate after graduation.

Common mistake You must decide in the first month.

Reality check You must learn the deadline in the first month. The decision can wait until you have grades.
