Compute net price
Sticker minus grants and scholarships you can actually keep — plus travel, health and books.
This is editorial context, not financial advice. Sticker price, net price, scholarships, loans, work-study and open-university bargains all hide tradeoffs — verify every number with your institution and a qualified adviser.
Sticker price is marketing; net price is arithmetic. US colleges publish cost of attendance, then discount with need-based aid, merit scholarships and state grants — your family contribution may bear little resemblance to the brochure. Korea’s 등록금 plus dorm and living still leave 학자금 대출 and 국가장학 as separate decisions. Always build a line-item budget and ask the bursar what last year’s freshmen actually paid.
Scholarships and grants are not the same creature. Grants (Pell, Cal Grant, France bourses sur critères sociaux, Germany BAföG half-grant) respond to income and household size. Merit scholarships chase grades and test scores but may renew only if GPA holds — read the fine print on stacking and renewal. External scholarships help, yet some universities reduce institutional aid dollar-for-dollar when you win them.
Loans are jurisdiction-specific instruments with different moral and legal weight. US federal loans offer income-driven repayment and forgiveness paths rare in private debt; private loans often lack those exits. Korea’s 학자금 대출 ties to income bands and employment status; Japan’s 奨学金 mixes grant-like 第一種 with repayable 第二種; UK undergraduate fee loans stretch decades via Plan thresholds. Never borrow the maximum because it is offered.
Work-study and part-time jobs trade time for cash — the hidden cost is course performance and sleep. On-campus roles near your department can build references; off-campus gigs that swallow evenings steal the reading blocks that determine whether you keep merit aid. In Germany, Werkstudent hours are capped with social-insurance implications; in France, étudiant jobs interact with bourse eligibility.
Open universities, online degrees and credit-bank paths advertise lower sticker prices. The tradeoff is often weaker campus recruiting, fewer labs and a signalling discount in some labour markets — plus the same opportunity cost of years not earning full-time. Cyber 大学 in Japan and Korea’s 원격대학 can fit caregivers and workers, but regulated professions may reject fragmented study patterns.
Build a funding stack with exit ramps. Year one: know renewal rules for every scholarship, the monthly loan payment after grace, and what happens if you drop below full-time. Keep paperwork for tax credits (US AOTC, Korean education deductions, French tax reductions) and visa work-hour limits if international. When numbers disagree between websites, trust the signed offer letter — and ask before you enroll, not after the bill arrives.
