Somerton Man (2019): Exhumation and tests

Open Somerton Man in the bound newspapers at 2019. The line the paper held is “Exhumation and tests,” and the figure printed with it is 21. Do not use the same verb for rumour and for a verdict. It is described here as what agencies and later scientists did after the fact, not as a guide to concealment.

The Somerton Man is Australia’s type unidentified-person file: a 1948 coronial mystery, a book fragment that named a genre, and a 2022 DNA claim that changed the name without closing the cause. Detective Sergeant Lionel Leane’s investigation recorded a man on the sand, a suitcase later recovered from Adelaide Railway Station with clothing and tools, and a death that pathologist John Burton Cleland could not reduce to a simple natural cause. Clothing labels had been removed — a fact the inquest noted, not a lesson this page will expand. No inquest paper identified a weapon or a struggle on the beach.

The Tamám Shud scrap, found weeks after the body, turned a local unexplained death into an English-language riddle. The Glenelg Rubaiyat, the pencil lines and Jestyn’s number are the exhibits that later books treat as a spy plot. They are also ordinary objects that a coroner could not convert into a named second person or a proved poison.

Jessica Thomson, the nurse behind the Jestyn inscription, is the living figure English readers most often meet. She denied knowing the man. Later interviews, including remarks after her death by her family, have been read both as concealment and as the stress of a police visit. Neither reading is a 1949 finding. Prosper Thomson, her then husband, is in the same neighbourhood file and was not charged with any offence arising from the death.

In 2019, Somerton Man keeps 21 and “Exhumation and tests.” Change the verb when the status changes.2019
