How it unfolded
Fifty-four years without a title since 1940; a 52-win Presidents' Trophy season felt like the last chance. Down 3–2 to New Jersey in the conference final, captain Mark Messier guaranteed a Game 6 win and delivered a hat trick in a 4–2 victory. The Final went seven after Stephan Matteau's double-overtime winner in the conference round. Vancouver took Game 1; New York won three straight, then dropped Games 5 and 6. At the Garden for Game 7, Brian Leetch scored first, Adam Graves added a second, and Trevor Linden answered shorthanded. Messier's third-period goal stood as the winner before Linden's power-play reply made it 3–2. With 1.6 seconds left, Craig MacTavish won the defensive-zone faceoff and the horn sounded. Mike Richter was in net; Leetch's 34 points in 23 games made him the first American Conn Smythe winner.
Why it still matters
The title lifted hockey's profile in America's largest market overnight. New York escaped the "1940" curse, and that summer the NHL pushed a new U.S. broadcast deal and Sun Belt expansion. Vancouver carried scars for years — post-game riots in 1994 foreshadowed those after the 2011 Final loss.
