Carpenter in 500: Guilds, cathedrals and temple carpenters

The work of Carpenter is summarised as 500’s “Guilds, cathedrals and temple carpenters.” The figure beside that summary is 500. A salary line in a job advert is not the job. Rose's account of his family's shop in Haddenham, Buckinghamshire, records the last generation of English village carpentry — coffins, wagon repairs, church roofs and well-heads — written by a working carpenter, and stil

The builder in wood — a trade older than Homo sapiens, still measuring twice and cutting once from Nara's ancient temples to Norway's timber towers. The English word betrays the trade's age: carpenter comes from the Latin carpentarius, a maker of carpenta — Gaulish two-wheeled carts — because for the Romans the wagon-builder stood for every worker in wood. The craft itself is older than our species. At Kalambo Falls in Zambia, archaeologists in 2023 described two interlocking logs, notched with stone tools roughly 476,000 years ago — a structural joint cut before Homo sapiens existed. On current evidence, carpentry is humanity's oldest construction trade.

Entry has kept the same shape for most of recorded history: a young person learns beside someone who already knows, and gets paid to do it. Today that means a three-to-four-year apprenticeship — union programs in North America, the dual system in German-speaking Europe, TAFE training contracts in Australia — ending in a journeyman's examination. No university degree is required anywhere, which makes carpentry one of the last well-paid professions whose classroom is a building site.

This page follows the trade from the Khufu ship's 4,500-year-old joints and the temple carpenters of Nara to balloon framing, the Skilsaw and today's cross-laminated timber towers. It covers how people actually become carpenters in different countries, what the work does to a body over decades, the know-how masters pass down, eight lives worth studying, and an honest accounting of which parts of the job factories and machines are already taking.

Say Carpenter with 500, “Guilds, cathedrals and temple carpenters,” and 500. Pay does not replace those three.500
