The role grew from human factors, cognitive psychology, ethnography and the human-computer interaction movement. Researchers such as Donald Norman argued that everyday objects should fit human abilities and errors; usability specialists later brought controlled testing into software companies. As digital products became central to banking, health, work and government, research became a distinct craft inside design organizations rather than an occasional task a designer performed alone.

The work is increasingly visible because a product can now record every click while still failing to explain why someone hesitated, abandoned a task or distrusted a result. AI can summarize transcripts, generate interview guides and cluster comments, but research quality depends on asking the right question, noticing an uncomfortable pause and preventing a team from mistaking convenient data for human understanding.

A UX researcher gathers evidence about people who use or might use a product. They choose methods such as interviews, usability tests, surveys, diary studies or analytics review; analyze recurring patterns; and explain implications to designers, engineers and product managers. The output is not a personal opinion about an interface, but a defensible account of user behavior and needs.
