Amelia Earhart disappearance: after “paras 2”, what about “paras 1”?

A sun line is a band, not a point. If Howland was missed, the same line also runs toward the Phoenix Islands. That geometry is why later researchers could argue both a ditching near Howland and a continued flight southeast. It is not, by itself, a wreck site. Noonan’s celestial navigation was the intended fix; the radio was the intended confirmation. Both failed in public.

That legal death is not a recovered body. It is the state’s way of ending a missing-person file when a long search has produced no aircraft. The Navy’s contemporary view — fuel exhaustion and a ditching near Howland — remains the default of official English. It has never been photographed on the seafloor in a form the services have accepted.

The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR) has, since the late 1980s, excavated and argued on Nikumaroro (Gardner Island), citing a 1937 Navy flyover of signs of habitation, later bones found in 1940 and since lost, and aluminium fragments. Professional archaeologists and the original British colonial bone measurements have been re-read in both directions.
