1911 Mona Lisa theft (1911): Press reproductions

Open 1911 Mona Lisa theft in the bound newspapers at 1911. The line the paper held is “Press reproductions,” and the figure printed with it is 13. Do not use the same verb for rumour and for a verdict. The poet is held over a separate Louvre sculpture theft by an acquaintance. Picasso is questioned. Both are cleared of the Mona Lisa.

A missing panel that made a celebrity The 1911 theft is the type case of an art crime whose cultural afterlife dwarfs its legal one: one man convicted, one painting returned, a global icon born in the empty space. The object is a poplar-panel portrait painted by Leonardo in the early sixteenth century, already in the French royal then national collection. In 1911 it was important; it was not yet a pilgrimage image. The empty wall, photographed and described in Le Petit Parisien and foreign wires, did more for its fame than any salon catalogue.

For twenty-eight months the Louvre hung a gap. Suspect lists wandered through modern artists and through Louvre staff. The painting itself was in Peruggia's Paris lodging for much of that time, a fact established after the Florence arrest — a hiding place, not a lesson. Apollinaire, Picasso and a press panic

Apollinaire had once possessed Iberian statuettes stolen from the Louvre by Géry Pieret. Police arrested the poet in September 1911. Picasso was brought in. Both were cleared of the Mona Lisa. The episode is part of the public record and a warning about celebrity dragnets. The Paris Prefecture and the Louvre's understaffed watch became a political embarrassment for the Third Republic. English and American papers treated the loss as proof that the Old World could not guard its masterpieces. That tone reversed in 1914 when the panel came home.

In 1911, 1911 Mona Lisa theft keeps 13 and “Press reproductions.” Change the verb when the status changes.1911
