The Diamond Centre vault served many small firms, not a single De Beers stockpile. Boxes held loose stones, mounted jewellery, gold and cash belonging to different tenants. That is why published totals vary: there was no one company inventory to audit against a single ledger. Insurers and the Antwerp diamond trade treated the weekend as a shock to a district that markets itself on secure custody. The unrecovered portion matters more than the courtroom names: stones that re-enter cutting and trading channels become hard to identify as the 2003 lot.

From a forest dump to an Antwerp dock Investigators reconstructed the weekend after a discarded cache of papers, videotape and building-related material was found near the Forêt de Soignes outside Brussels. That find, not a confession in the vault, tied Notarbartolo's rented office to the loss.

Arrests followed in Antwerp. English readers later met the story through Wired and the 2010 book Flawless by Scott Andrew Selby and Greg Campbell, which named the School of Turin label.
