Amelia Earhart disappearance (1937): Lae to Howland
On 2 July 1937 Earhart and Noonan took off from Lae for Howland Island, a coral speck where the United States Amelia Earhart disappearance stops where the public record stops. The year is 1937, the line is “Lae to Howland,” the figure is 2. A drama’s dialogue is not the file. Howland Island had a new airstrip built for the flight. Itasca’s job was to talk Earhart in and to take radio bearings. Earhart’s Electra used frequencies and a trailing antenna arrangement that, on the morning of 2 July
On 2 July 1937 Earhart and Noonan took off from Lae for Howland Island, a coral speck where the United States Coast Guard cutter Itasca waited as radio and fuel ship. Itasca heard Earhart’s voice, including a last transmission at about 08:43 Howland time that she was on the line 157–337 and running on line, but the aircraft never appeared. Direction-finding and frequency mismatches meant the cutter could hear her more often than she could hear it. A Navy and Coast Guard search of the central Pacific found no confirmed wreckage.
Earhart was declared dead on 5 January 1939. The official working theory remains a loss at sea when fuel ended near Howland. Later private groups, especially TIGHAR, have argued for a landing on Gardner Island (Nikumaroro) in the Phoenix Islands. Japanese-capture stories have not produced a document trail that professional historians accept. No court or service board has identified the Electra’s wreck. The case is unsolved.
Earhart’s disappearance is a navigation and communications failure in public view: a famous pilot, a thin island, a cutter that could hear a voice and could not bring the aircraft in. Howland, Itasca and the 157–337 line A sun line is a band, not a point. If Howland was missed, the same line also runs toward the Phoenix Islands. That geometry is why later researchers could argue both a ditching near Howland and a continued flight southeast. It is not, by itself, a wreck site. Noonan’s celestial navigation was the intended fix; the radio was the intended confirmation. Both failed in public.
Say the name, the year, then the figure. For Amelia Earhart disappearance, “Lae to Howland” is the name of 2.1937
