Owl in 1965: Payne hearing work

[88] [owl-3-88] In 1965, the field log for Owl is headed “Payne hearing work.” The figure kept beside that heading is 2. It is a count or a date from the work, not a rank of the species’ worth. A zoo birthday card does not replace the log. Scores compare the owl with the other 23 types on speed, intelligence, range, resilience, cultural impact and ecological role. They are relative editorial marks

Nocturnal raptors whose facial discs, silent flight and asymmetric ears turn darkness into a hunting map. Why can some owls hunt in total darkness? Barn owls can strike by hearing alone. Asymmetric ear openings give elevation; the facial disc gives azimuth. Vision still matters in starlight.

The velvet and comb are strongest in forest nocturnal hunters. Fish owls and some burrowing species are noisier — water and day hunting change the trade. Are owls wise in the biological sense? Corvids and parrots outscore owls on many lab tasks. The “wise owl” is Athena’s bird, not a working-memory ranking.

Why did Harry Potter use a snowy owl? Hedwig is Bubo scandiacus, an Arctic lemming specialist. The films made a tundra bird the global pet-owl image — and briefly spiked illegal trade. Tyto alba can lay 2–12 eggs when vole cycles peak. Nest-box programmes in UK barns track that boom-bust directly.

Keep 1965, “Payne hearing work,” and 2 together or the note on Owl stops being that year’s record.1965
